Most travellers come to Uzbekistan in spring or autumn. Those who come in winter discover a different country: quiet monuments, crisp clear days and the warmth of teahouses after a cold walk.

What winter is like

From December to February, days are short and temperatures often drop below zero at night, especially in Khiva and the desert west. Daytime can be bright and sunny, and snow occasionally covers Samarkand's domes for a day or two. The main sights stay open all year.

Why travel now

  • No crowds: Registan, Poi Kalyan and Itchan Kala are almost empty.
  • Better value: hotel rates are at their lowest of the year.
  • Atmosphere: steaming somsa ovens, hot tea and long lunches.
  • Photography: low winter light and the rare snowfall make for unusual images.

Mountains near Tashkent

The mountains east of Tashkent offer skiing and snow scenery about an hour or two from the city. Resorts in the Chimgan area, including Amirsoy, have modern lifts and hotels and suit both skiers and travellers who simply want a day in the snow.

A winter city break works well: two nights in Tashkent, two in Samarkand and a day in the mountains, all connected by train and short transfers.

Practical tips

  • Pack warm layers, a hat, gloves and waterproof shoes.
  • Plan fewer sights per day and add an extra night to keep the pace relaxed.
  • Some smaller guesthouses close for winter, so book carefully.
  • New Year is a major celebration, with busier trains and higher prices around 31 December.
