When to Visit Uzbekistan for the Best Weather

Seasonal

Uzbekistan has a continental climate: hot, dry summers, cold winters and two long, gentle shoulder seasons in between. There is no single best month for everyone. The right time depends on what your travellers want to see and how they handle heat.

Spring: April to early June

Spring is the most popular season, and for good reason. Daytime temperatures in Samarkand and Bukhara usually sit between the high teens and the high twenties Celsius, the steppe is briefly green and the mountains around Tashkent are in bloom.

  • Best for: classic heritage circuits, photography, walking-heavy programs.
  • Keep in mind: this is peak season. Hotels in the old towns and high-speed train seats fill early.

Navruz, the spring new year on 21 March, brings street celebrations, music and sumalak, a sweet wheat dish cooked through the night. It is a wonderful time to travel, though some sites and offices close for the holiday.

Summer: mid-June to August

Summer is hot, especially in the desert west. Bukhara and Khiva regularly pass 40°C in July. Tashkent and Samarkand are a little milder but still very warm.

Summer can still work well with the right design:

  • Start sightseeing at 7–8 am and rest in the middle of the day.
  • Add the mountains: Chimgan and the Charvak reservoir are a short drive from Tashkent and noticeably cooler.
  • Enjoy the fruit season. Apricots, cherries, grapes and the famous melons fill the bazaars.
Operator tip: for summer groups we schedule desert-city visits early and late in the day and place air-conditioned rail transfers at midday.

Autumn: September to early November

Autumn rivals spring as the best time to visit. Days are warm and settled, evenings are cool, and the light on the tilework is softer. September and October are also harvest months, which makes them excellent for gastronomy programs.

  • Best for: heritage circuits, food-focused journeys, combined Uzbekistan and Central Asia programs.
  • Keep in mind: late October and November evenings in the desert can be cold. Pack a warm layer.

Winter: December to February

Winter is the quiet season. Temperatures can fall below zero, snow occasionally dusts Samarkand and Khiva, and some smaller guesthouses close. In return, travellers have Registan and the old town of Khiva almost to themselves, and hotel rates are at their lowest.

  • Best for: city breaks, photography, culture-focused travellers who do not mind the cold.
  • Keep in mind: shorter days mean fewer sights per day, so plan an extra night.

Month by month at a glance

  • March: cool and changeable. Navruz on 21 March.
  • April–May: ideal weather, peak demand.
  • June: warming up. Good early in the month.
  • July–August: hot. Best with early starts and the mountains.
  • September–October: ideal weather, harvest season.
  • November: cool and quiet. Good value.
  • December–February: cold, empty monuments, lowest prices.

Our recommendation

For first-time travellers and most groups, plan for mid-April to May or mid-September to October. For travellers who value space and price over warm weather, the winter months are an underrated choice. Tell us when your clients want to travel, and we will shape the program around the season rather than against it.
