Travel Updates

2026 has changed how a classic Uzbekistan circuit can be built. Khiva is now within reach of high-speed rail, Shakhrisabz has its weekend service back, and fares have moved. Here is what matters when you plan programs for the coming seasons.

High-speed rail now reaches Khiva

The electrified Bukhara–Urgench–Khiva line is open, and since early May 2026 a high-speed service runs from Tashkent to Khiva via Samarkand, Bukhara and Urgench. The full journey from Tashkent takes about seven and a half hours, roughly half the time of the old conventional train.

For most programs, the more useful number is the Bukhara–Khiva leg. It now takes a little over three hours by rail, compared with a long day on the road through the Kyzylkum desert. That turns the classic west-to-east circuit into a comfortable sequence of short transfers.

  • Classic circuit, no internal flights: Tashkent → Samarkand → Bukhara → Khiva entirely by rail, returning by air from Urgench.
  • Reverse routing: fly into Urgench, start in Khiva, and finish in Tashkent by train.
  • Group logistics: fewer coach days means fewer driver hours and an easier day for older travellers.
Operator tip: high-speed seats on the Khiva line are limited and sell out in peak weeks. For April–May and September–October departures, confirm rail before you confirm hotels.

Shakhrisabz is back on weekends

Since 27 March 2026, a high-speed service again links Tashkent with Shakhrisabz on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Shakhrisabz, the birthplace of Amir Temur, works well as a day extension from Samarkand or as a stop on the way south. On weekdays we still arrange it by road, which takes about two hours from Samarkand through the Takhtakaracha pass.

Fares are higher than last year

Tickets on Afrosiyob and several other intercity trains rose by about 15% from 1 February 2026. If your 2027 contract rates were built on 2025 rail prices, it is worth reviewing them now. Our 2027 tariff already reflects the current fares.

New boutique and heritage hotels

The old towns of Bukhara and Khiva continue to see small hotels open in restored merchant houses and madrasah-style buildings. Many of them offer exactly what our partners ask for: a courtyard, a short walk to the monuments and a real sense of place.

New properties also carry risk. Opening dates slip, staff are still learning, and photos can look better than rooms. Our rule is simple:

  • We inspect every new property in person before it appears in a proposal.
  • We do not place groups in a hotel during its first season unless we have stayed there ourselves.
  • We always hold a proven alternative at the same category.

What this means for your 2027 programs

Rail is now the backbone of a good Uzbekistan itinerary, not an add-on. A 9- or 10-day program can cover the four classic cities with only one domestic flight, which lowers cost and carbon and adds time on the ground. Send us your dates and group size, and we will check seat availability before quoting.
