Bukhara has more than two thousand years of history packed into an old town you can cross on foot in half an hour. Unlike many heritage cities, it still feels lived in. This one-day walking route covers the essentials at a comfortable pace.

Morning: Lyabi-Hauz and the trading domes

Start at Lyabi-Hauz, a pool shaded by old mulberry trees and framed by a madrasah and a khanaka. From here, walk into the covered trading domes, built along the old caravan streets:

  • Toki Sarrofon: once the money-changers' dome.
  • Toki Telpak Furushon: the cap-makers' dome, now full of textiles and suzani.
  • Toki Zargaron: the jewellers' dome, close to the main square.

Midday: Poi Kalyan

Poi Kalyan is the heart of the city. The Kalyan Minaret, built in 1127, survived Genghis Khan and still dominates the skyline. It stands between the Kalyan Mosque and the Mir-i-Arab Madrasah, whose blue domes are among the most photographed in Central Asia.

Return to Poi Kalyan in the evening. With fewer visitors and soft light on the brickwork, it feels like a different place.

Afternoon: the Ark and beyond

  • The Ark: the fortress-residence of Bukhara's rulers, with museums inside its massive walls.
  • Bolo Hauz Mosque: known for the slender carved wooden columns of its terrace.
  • Samanid Mausoleum: a 10th-century masterpiece of patterned brick in a quiet park.
  • Chor Minor: a small gatehouse with four turquoise-topped towers, a short walk from the centre.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes. Many lanes are cobbled or unpaved.
  • In summer, walk early and late, and rest in a courtyard teahouse at midday.
  • Bukhara is excellent for crafts: suzani, gold embroidery, ceramics and miniature painting.

Staying longer

With a second day, add the Sitorai Mohi-Xosa summer palace, the Bahouddin Naqshband complex and a craft workshop visit. Bukhara rewards slow travel more than any other city on the circuit.
