Shakhrisabz, whose name means green city, was the birthplace of Amir Temur. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and makes one of the best day trips from Samarkand.

What to see

  • Ak-Saray Palace: only the vast entrance arch survives, but its scale and tilework show how grand Temur's summer palace once was.
  • Dorut Tilavat complex: including the Kok Gumbaz Mosque, built by Temur's grandson Ulugbek.
  • Dorus Saodat: a memorial complex Temur built for his family, with a crypt intended for himself.
  • Local bazaar and workshops: Shakhrisabz is known for its distinctive suzani embroidery.

Getting there

The road from Samarkand crosses the Takhtakaracha pass and takes around two hours. The views over the mountains are part of the experience, with stops for photographs and fruit stalls in season. In winter the pass can be affected by snow, and we use the longer lowland road instead.

A high-speed train also links Tashkent with Shakhrisabz on weekends, which makes it possible to include the town on a route without driving back to Samarkand.

Combine Shakhrisabz with lunch in a mountain village on the way. It turns a monument visit into a full and relaxed day out.

Who it suits

  • Travellers with three or more days in Samarkand.
  • Groups interested in Amir Temur and the Timurid dynasty.
  • Anyone looking for a quieter heritage site with fewer crowds.

Planning tips

Allow a full day from Samarkand. Start early, visit the monuments in the cooler morning hours and come back over the pass in the afternoon light. For groups we schedule a guide who knows both cities, so the Timurid story connects from one to the other.
