Uzbek som, card payments, ATMs and bazaar cash. A simple guide to handling money on an Uzbekistan trip.

Money in Uzbekistan is much simpler than it was a decade ago. Currency exchange is open and straightforward, cards are widely accepted in the cities and ATMs are easy to find. A few habits still make the trip smoother.
The local currency is the Uzbek som (UZS). Prices are in large numbers, so it is worth taking a moment to get used to the zeros. Exchange rates change, so check a current rate before you travel rather than relying on an old guidebook.
You will still need cash for bazaars, small shops, tips, toilets at some sites and photo fees. ATMs are common in city centres and in many hotels. In smaller towns they can be fewer, so withdraw before you leave a big city.
Keep a mix: a card for hotels and restaurants, and enough som in small notes for markets, tips and small purchases. Small notes make bargaining much easier.
Banks and official exchange offices, including those at airports and in many hotels, offer fair rates. Bring clean, undamaged banknotes, as worn or old notes may be refused. Avoid unofficial street exchange.
In our programs, most costs such as hotels, transport, guides, entrance fees and included meals are prepaid. Travellers only need money for personal spending, shopping and optional extras, which keeps things simple for everyone.
